Understanding of independent monitors in monitoring, both on SVLK and forestry issues in general

The Independent Monitor (PI) is one of the main actors in the Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK) in Indonesia. The PI consists of civil society organizations and community groups living around the forest to monitor the implementation of the SVLK by forestry actors to ensure accountability and credibility of the SVLK. The existence of PI in monitoring the implementation of SVLK has a good impact on efforts to improve this system. The important role of PI is also legally stated in the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number 8 of 2021 concerning Forest Management and the Preparation of Forest Management Plans, as well as Forest Utilization in Protection Forests and Production Forests.
From 2010 to 2021, more than 500 individuals in 28 provinces have attended training to increase the capacity of Independent Monitors.
