Capacity Building

Monitoring activities, capacity strengthening, and advocacy to promote transparency and accountability in forestry governance.

Strengthening the Capacity of Independent Monitors

JPIK’s efforts to enhance civil society capacity to strengthen forest monitoring and promote accountability in forest governance.

Independent Monitors (IM) are one of the key actors in Indonesia’s Timber Legality Verification System (SVLK). IM consists of civil society organizations and community groups living around forests who monitor the implementation of SVLK by forestry actors to ensure the accountability and credibility of the system. The presence of IM in monitoring SVLK implementation has positively contributed to efforts to improve the system. The important role of IM is also legally recognized in Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 8 of 2021 concerning Forest Management and the Preparation of Forest Management Plans, as well as Forest Utilization in Protected Forests and Production Forests.

Objectives

To improve the capacity of independent monitors in conducting monitoring as a safeguard to ensure improvements in forest governance. Capacity building covers SVLK issues as well as broader forestry issues.

Targets

Non-governmental organizations, media institutions, universities, and the wider public who have interest in monitoring the implementation of SVLK and forestry issues in general.

Outputs

Improved understanding among independent monitors in conducting monitoring, covering both SVLK-specific issues and forestry issues in general.
