The #SaveAru Coalition, which consists of activists from civil society organizations, women, youth and students, indigenous peoples and local communities in the Aru Islands, dissent the investment plan for Forest Utilization Business Permit (PBPH) by PT Wana Sejahtera Abadi (WSA), and PT Alam Subur Indonesia and PT Bumi Lestari Internasional, a subsidiary of Melchor
Group Indonesia.

The Aru Community’s rejection of large-scale land-based investments have the potential to damage nature and destroy the community’s water sources and livelihoods has occurred repeatedly. In 2013, the people of Aru dissented the Menara Group’s sugar plantation investment plan, which covers almost 70% of Aru’s land area. In 2018, the Aru community again refused permission for the largest cattle ranch in Indonesia, around 61,000 hectares in Southern Aru. Currently, the Aru Community and the #SaveARU coalition are again calling for the rejection of investment by PT WSA and Melchor Group Indonesia.
